Teatro San Diego Collaborates with Disney Live Entertainment to bring Disney opportunities to San Diego!
In September 2023 Teatro San Diego partnered with Disney Live Entertainment to host an Information Session & Audition Workshop hosted at La Vie Dance Studio! The day consisted of an interactive discussion about various performance opportunities with Disney hosted by Disney Live Entertainment's Stephen Gelpi, Alyssa Warren, and Suzanne Davison. This was followed by an exciting movement workshop led by Disney entertainment alum Melissa Glasgow!

It will be an unprecedented production for the Mid-City community of City Heights San Diego in scope and access. With a cast size of 22 professional actors, the entirety of the West Side Story run will be offered completely free to the public at the City Heights Performance Annex. The show will run weekends Fridays-Sundays, August 18-27 at 3795 Fairmount Ave, San Diego, CA 92105.

Winners have been announced for the 2022 BroadwayWorld San Diego Awards. The 2022 Regional Awards honor productions which had their first performance between October 1, 2021 through September 30, 2022.

The 1975 Tony Award winner for Best Musical, will be helmed by Chadae Nichol. A select group of four students (Teatro Scholars) will participate in the production both on stage and behind the scenes. The World Premieres of Body Talk by Clinton Sherwood and The Dropout: The Unofficial Musical by Victoria Matlock Fowler were awarded the SD Fringe 2022 Outstanding Musical Ensemble! They were both the inaugural selections of Teatro San Diego's New Works!

The Dropout (The Unofficial Musical) -- An ambitious 19-year-old Stanford dropout takes a road of moral compromise after she has an idea that could change the world. Based on the true story of Elizabeth Holmes and her startup company, Theranos.
Body Talk – A series of vignettes, tying together snippets of life and finds realization through the need to put our bodies in the foreground of our storytelling. From Rihanna to Sondheim, we asks the question, "why is what we say more important than what we do?" Let's talk body.
We are partnering up with Oceanside Theatre Company to remount a live version of our award winning production of Songs For A New World. It will be our first production with a live audience! Helmed once again by Kevin Blax Burroughs, with the award winning scenic design by Reiko Huffman.

Since 2003, the San Diego Theatre Critics Circle has collectively honored local theater productions, artists and designers at the annual Craig Noel Awards. But for the second year in a row, the annual awards program has been canceled because of the pandemic.
Instead, Critics Circle members like myself are writing their own top 10 lists to honor work that might otherwise go unsung in a year when even getting the doors back open was a Herculean achievement. Here’s a look back at 10 favorite shows and performances in San Diego theater in 2021.

Jason Robert Brown's Songs For A New World will stream online August 5-15 with show times at 4pm and 7pm Pacific. Songs For A New World was filmed at On Stage Playhouse in Chula Vista. "Without the support of On Stage Playhouse we would not be at the stage we are now, as a new nonprofit" says Julio Catano-Yee Executive Director of Teatro San Diego.

Kevin "Blax" Burroughs will helm the production as director and lighting designer. Blax's creative vision will center the show in social justice themes including Racial Justice, Feminism, Gender Equality and White Privilege. Streaming August 8-15, the show will be performed and recorded in Chula Vista at On Stage Playhouse. Tickets will go on sale later in July.
We are excited to be partnering with the McGill School of Success to teach a musical theatre summer camp this July! Thank you to principal Norma Sandoval for believing in our vision and advocating for arts education! Led by Ryan Burtanog, we will be teaching and setting Madagascar Jr. on the students! Annabell Walker will be assisting with choreography and Reiko Huffman will consult and guide students in scenic design.
Resilient to the conditions set forth by the COVID-19 pandemic, these students excelled in adapting and performing exceptionally quickly. Remarkably, the students learned all of the choreography in 4 zoom sessions and one in-person rehearsal.
Songs For A New World is a series of songs with the common theme of making a decision. Each song and performer in this production will represent forms of social injustice in America such as Feminism, White Privilege, Gender Equality & Racial Justice.
Amidst the coronavirus pandemic a young group of BIPOC artists came together to incorporate a nonprofit in San Diego, California. Inspired by the United States civil rights movement of the summer of 2020, Teatro San Diego was created.
